Why Support Headache Australia?
By becoming a Member of the Headache Australia Club, you will be joining the only organisation in Australian representing headache and migraine. The Brain Foundation, through the Headache Australia program, aims to have headache:
- Recognised as a major public health disorder that is biologically based, common, occurs in all age groups, is burdensome and treatable.
- Taken seriously.
The Foundation currently receives no government funding for its headache and migraine programs, which are funded by monies secured through fundraising. Current headache and migraine programs include:
- Development of a headache website, information sheets and other publications, such as Brainwaves magazine, with comprehensive information about all aspects of headache. All copy is reviewed by one of the world’s leading headache specialists.
- Ongoing review of all information as developments occur and as requested by those affected by headache
- Information line manned by general staff and volunteers.
- Development of public education and support programs aimed at those affected by headache including a specific program for children. Programs aimed at health care providers at all levels. These programs include an annual Headache & Migraine Awareness Week.
- Campaign to raise public and government awareness of headache and migraine, their prevalence and impact, particularly encouraging an estimated one million undiagnosed migraineurs to consult their general practitioners.
- Campaign to raise awareness of the Brain Foundation, through Headache Australia, as the only public organization representing those affected by headache disorders and whose work is supported by specialist neurologists.
- Informal research project to ascertain working days lost due to headache and most frequently used medication for acute treatment.
- Funding of migraine research being carried out by Dr Geoff Lambert and Dr Alessandro Zagami, Department of Neurology, Prince Henry Hospital.
- Fundraising to support the above programs and so benefit those affected by headache.
